Polpat Asavaprapa is a Thai designer who founded his ready-to-wear label ASAVA in 2008. With an MBA from Claremont and a fashion design degree from Parsons, Polpat worked in New York for the likes of Giorgio Armani and MAXMARA as well as interned for Marc Jacobs before his return to Thailand.

Fashion Studio Magazine had an opportunity to interview the designer during the glamorous Asian Couture Evening 2012 in Singapore. (Don't forget to save the date for Fide Fashion Weeks in October -  this year's event will be even more exciting!) In the meantime, read our exclusive interview below.

FASHION STUDIO: How did you become a fashion designer?

POLPAT: As far as I remember, I always wanted to be a designer. I think it is only natural that I became one.

FASHION STUDIO: What are the main challenges of your job?

POLPAT: To expand my business substantially and stay true to myself as a designer at the same time.

FASHION STUDIO: Which decade do you consider most important in fashion?

POLPAT: From 1940 to 1970.

FASHION STUDIO: Who is your fashion icon?

POLPAT: Diana Vreeland. For living icons, it has to be Tilda Swanton and Iris Apfel.

FASHION STUDIO: How to develop personal style?

POLPAT: To expolore with an open mind and eventually one will learn from experience. Style is an evolution.

FASHION STUDIO: What are we going to wear this summer?

POLPAT: A combination of muti-color stripes, lace and neon colors.

FASHION STUDIO: Your definition of elegance...

POLPAT: Elegance is not about what you wear but it is simply about the way you think.

FASHION STUDIO: Where do you get your inspiration from?

POLPAT:  Inspiration is so overrated.

FASHION STUDIO: What are the most essential items every woman should have in her closet?

POLPAT:  White blouse, black pencil skirt, stiletto and the right attitude.

FASHION STUDIO: What city do you consider the fashion capital of the world and why?

POLPAT: New York because in fashion anything goes and so is New York. The mix of culture and interests always inspires me.

POLPAT: No, not in a few sentences.

FASHION STUDIO: What projects are you currently working on?

POLPAT: My new TV show.

FASHION STUDIO: What are your goals for next year?

POLPAT: My next year goal has always been to loose weight and it will remain the same.

FASHION STUDIO: Could you give a piece of advice to all aspiring fashion designers? Where should they start?

POLPAT: To create beautiful clothes is an art but to create a beautiful brand is a science.

FASHION STUDIO: Thank you for your time and we wish you all the best for the future!
