London, UK - On 4 May, Selfridges London launched the Britannica 1951-1953 exhibition as part of their all-encompassing summer celebration, The Big British Bang.
Britannica 1951-1953 is a new fashion exhibition conceived by esteemed curator Judith Clark in collaboration with illustrious milliner Stephen Jones, exclusively for Selfridges. The unmissable exhibition is an homage to some of the most desirable styles worn by the Queens contemporaries between 1951 and 1953, recreating key looks from this period in their entirety.
Stephen Jones, the exhibitions main contributor, has created a collection of outstanding hats exclusively for Britannica 1951-1953. The showpieces - all in the colour of coronation season, champagne pink - will add meaning to the central narrative of the exhibition.
The inspiration for the exhibition was drawn from three issues of British Vogue published each February between 1951 and 1953. The Britannica issues of Vogue, much like the new eponymous exhibition, set out to celebrate Britishness and review its essence, especially in fashion terms, in the aftermath of the war and the advent of the new Queen, Elizabeth II.
Educational, celebratory and surreal, Britannica 1951-1953 will present the Queens early fashion era under a bright, brand new light. Visit the Lower Ground floor Ultralounge from Friday 4 May to experience it for yourself.
